Toyota . How to Remove & Replace a Subaru Transmission

If you must replace your clutch, replace your transmission or have it rebuilt, you will have to remove the transmission. Removing the transmission on a Subaru is straightforward and similar to the process for other vehicles, with some key differences. The Subaru transmission is relatively heavy, so it would benefit you to have a helper when lifting it in and out of the car and to ensure that it remains on the lift during removal.
Difficulty:Moderately Challenging
Instructions Things You'll Need
Jack
Jack stands
1/2-inch drive ratchet
Wrench
Ratchet and socket set
Punch
Hammer
Transmission lift attachment for jack stand
New clutch kit
Resurfaced or new flywheel

Step by Step :
1
Lift the Subaru with the jack, and rest the vehicle on jack stands.
2
Drain the transmission gear oil from the transmission. To do this, use a 1/2-inch drive ratchet, and insert it into the transmission drain plug and remove the plug. This will ensure that you don't spill transmission fluid during removal.
3
Disconnect the drive shaft and exhaust pipe, as they will both be in the way of removing the transmission. The drive shaft will be connected to the transmission with four bolts. Simply use a wrench to remove them. To remove the exhaust, use a ratchet and extensions if necessary.
4
Remove the transmission mount at the top the transmission with a wrench or ratchet. It will be connected to the firewall and held with a bolt.
5
Disconnect any wiring connected to the transmission, and remember where it goes.
6
Disconnect both drive axles from the transmission. Subaru uses pins that hold the axles to the transmission; use a punch and hammer to drive the pins out to remove the axles.
7
Use the ratchet to remove the seven or eight bolts holding the transmission to the engine block. Place a transmission lift underneath the transmission to hold the transmission and lower it down. If you don't have a transmission lift, you can also use a transmission attachment for your jack.
8
Shake the transmission back and forth until it drops onto the jack. Pull the transmission straight back, ensuring that no pressure is put on the input shaft, and lower the transmission to the ground.
9
Jack the new transmission into place, and push the input shaft straight into the flywheel hole. Bolt it down to specification.

Step by Step :
10
Install the axles by pushing them into the transmission with your hands. Then insert the pins with your hand, and use a punch and hammer to drive them into the axle.

Step by Step :
11
Reconnect the wiring, exhaust system and drive shaft in reverse order of the steps above.

Step by Step :
12
Use the ratchet to connect the transmission to the transmission mount on the firewall.
Tips & Warnings
Getting the input shaft splines to line up in the clutch may prove difficult. If this happens, spin the output shaft with your hand. This will reposition the input shaft and allow you to insert it into the clutch.

The transmission is very heavy (150 pounds) and could inflict injury if you are not careful handling it. If you aren't in good shape physically, this job is better left to the pros.

Wear safety goggles to protect yourself from injury.

Toyota . How to Replace a Floor Pan in a VW Bug

Volkswagen Beetles tend to run forever, so rusted-out floor pans are not uncommon. They are a little complicated to replace, but this type of job can be accomplished by anyone with the right tools and a basic understanding of auto body repair. Replacing a floor pan in a VW Bug is an inexpensive repair that comes with a lot of job-well-done satisfaction.
Difficulty:Moderately Challenging
Instructions Things You'll Need
Floor pan
Sawzall
Hammer and chisel or chisel-tip muffler cutter
Wrench set
Drill
Spot welding equipment
Sealant
Undercoating spray
Rust preventive spray

Step by Step :
1
Remove the seats and floor carpet, then the heater tubes, battery and rear seat support to get to the edges of the floor pans. If you're working on the driver's side floor pan, disconnect the clutch cable and remove the pedal cluster.
2
Use a Sawzall to cut the floor pan away around the edges, working from inside the car and staying about ¼ inch to ½ inch in from the lip that runs along the edge of the tunnel and supports. When you get to the heater channel, you'll need to cut from under the car, just for the last inch or two. Cut the last of the pan away from under the car, carefully avoiding the heater channel.
3
Remove the pan bolts from the heater channel, and the floor pan should drop out.
4
Chisel away any remaining edges of the floor pan with a chisel-tip muffler cutter or a hammer and a chisel, and grind the lip edges smooth.
5
Prepare the new pan by drilling out the spot welds that hold the rear chassis supports attached to the new floor pan. Use the originals instead; they will be sturdier. Since you're replacing the pan with the body still on, you'll need to use the Sawzall to trim out a rectangular piece from each outer corner of the new pan where the body attaches to the frame.
6
Bend up about 1 inch along the front edge of the floor pan. This will allow you to slide the pan onto the lip from under the car. Once the pan is in place, bend it back down.
7
Replace the gasket around the edges of the new floor pan, and bolt it loosely into place. Once the bolts are lined up and you're sure it's a good fit, tighten the bolts.
8
Weld the edges using either plug or a stitch weld, and then use a seam sealant all the way around.
9
Spray the pan with undercoat on the bottom and a rust preventive on the inside.
Tips & Warnings
Always use protective eyewear when working with power tools.

Store used coolant safely until disposal. Pour the used coolant into a container with a screw-on cap, label the container as "coolant" or "antifreeze," and place it well out of the reach of kids and pets until you can dispose of it, following the instructions in Step 6. Don't use containers that formerly contained beverages. They are too easily mistaken, and the sweet taste of the coolant can compound the error. 6. Dispose of used coolant safely. The most environmentally safe method is to take the coolant to a recycling center that handles toxic waste or bring it to a place that specifically recycles used coolant. Some auto supply stores accept used coolant as a public service. Call the major stores in your area to see whether they do so. If not, try a service station. They can either run the coolant through their recycling machine or include it in the batch they send out for safe disposal.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) advises, "If your home is connected to a sanitary or municipal sewer system, household quantities of antifreeze can be flushed down the drain with plenty of water." The EPA warns that antifreeze can overwhelm the organisms in your septic system, damaging the system, and suggests that if your wastewater goes into a septic tank, you should dispose of antifreeze in a sanitary sewer system. The organization cautions, "Do not pour antifreeze into storm sewer openings, sinkholes, or abandoned wells." EH If your engine boils over, be sure to clean up the spill wherever you are. Wild animals are just as vulnerable to being poisoned by coolant as domestic pets are. Finding Leaks in the Cooling System In addition to keeping the water and coolant level where it needs to be, you can prevent trouble by keeping an eye out for leaks and replacing old or damaged hoses. Figure 14-4 shows the common trouble spots in the cooling system — the places where you should check for coolant leaks. The following sections give you a few pointers on what types of coolant leaks to look for, and the section "Repairing Leaks in the Cooling System" tells you what to do if you find them. Look under your vehicle in the morning to see whether any liquid is on the ground under it. If you see liquid, stick your finger in it and smell it. If it's coolant (green, red, blue, orange, or rust colored), look around the parts of the car that are over the puddle and feel around for wetness. If you're not sure what the stuff that's leaking out of your vehicle is, see Chapter 20 for an easy way to locate, troubleshoot, and deal with leaks of all types, including oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. '>art'"" ^eeP'n9 ^our ^ar m Good Condition, System by System Check the radiator Look around your radiator for whitish deposits or rust-colored stains. These indicate old leaks that have dried. They may not be all that old; water tends to evaporate quickly on a hot radiator. If you find any, the "Radiator leaks" section later in this chapter tells you what to do. Also check the front end of the radiator to see whether the surface is befouled with dirt, leaves, and bugs. If so, remove them with a brush and a garden hose. ^ —-^ If your radiator catches a lot of debris, you can attach a piece of nylon window screen over the front surface with twist-ties to trap the stuff and keep it from getting stuck between the radiator fins.

Check the radiator cap If you don't have a safety pressure cap, or if your vehicle overheats easily, the cheapest possible remedy is to buy a new safety cap or replace the rubber gasket in the cap you have. If you aren't sure, ask a mechanic to pressure-test your cap to see whether it's functioning properly. If you need a new one, give the salesperson the make, model, and year of your vehicle and check the pressure limits (psi) on the new cap against your owner's manual to make sure that you're buying the proper cap for the amount of pressure in your cooling system. Never let a service station you don't normally frequent hook you into buying a new radiator cap unless you make them pressure-test your old cap. You may want to have them test the new cap, as well. I've been sold a faulty new cap to replace a faulty old one! Check the hoses Regularly check all the hoses under the hood of your vehicle, whether or not you've been having trouble. For instant panic, there's nothing like having a hose burst while you're driving. If it's a radiator hose, the resulting shower of steam is frightening at best and dangerous at worst. If a vacuum hose goes, the sudden loss of vacuum can stop your car in the midst of traffic. Checking your hoses and replacing the funky ones before they leak can save your nerves and your pocketbook in the long run. If you find a hose that's soft and squishy, bulgy, hard or brittle, cracked, leaking, or marked with a whitish deposit where stuff has leaked and dried, replace it immediately, before it breaks.
